Windows guide

Mute Windows when you lock your PC.

The original Mute on Lock app predates Windows 10 and 11. Here are safer ways to reproduce the behavior today.

Do not install random copies of Mute on Lock. The original utility is retired, and third-party download packages have not been verified by the current SuperUtils operator.

The practical option

Use a currently maintained, open-source Windows utility that explicitly supports your Windows version. Review its publisher, source code, release history, and antivirus scan before installing it. The Super User community currently points readers to WinMute as one modern option.

The built-in route

Advanced users can use Windows Task Scheduler with workstation lock and unlock events, then call a trusted local script or audio-control tool. Windows does not provide a simple built-in “mute on lock” toggle, and event-driven solutions vary by edition and audio driver.

About the old utility

SuperUtils Mute on Lock ran in the system tray, muted sound on workstation lock, and restored it after unlock. Period coverage often recommended Windows XP compatibility mode even on Windows 7, which is a clear sign that the original binary should not be presented as a current solution.
