Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text is a scrambled extract from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”). The original line reads “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”, roughly “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain.” Printers used a garbled version as filler type for centuries, and desktop publishing software made it standard in the 1980s.
Because the words are cut and rearranged, lorem ipsum has no meaning, which is exactly the point: it fills space without drawing the eye to the content.
